Abstract

A gas chromatographic method for the separation and quantitation of submicrogram amounts of pentaerythritol tetranitrate and other organic nitrate esters of common therapeutic use is presented. The procedure allows the quantitative simultaneous analysis of pentaerythritol tetranitrate, the trifluoroacetylated derivatives of its lesser nitrate esters and pentaerythritol on a single column. For rapid, routine analysis the flame ionization detection is employed with a sensitivity in the micro- to submicrogram range. With electron capture detection, the sensitivity is in the nano- to subnanogram range. This sensitivity is adequate for quantitating the low levels of pentaerythritol and pentaerythritol nitrate esters in biological fluids.
