Abstract
AbstractLong chain saturated and unsaturated aldehydes, prepared by the partial reduction of the corresponding fatty acid phenyl esters with lithium tri‐t‐butoxyhydroaluminate, were converted quantitatively to their dimethylhydrazones. Dimethyl acetals and 1,3‐dioxolanes were prepared from the dimethylhydrazones. The dimethylhydrazones were then separated from the corresponding aldehydes by gas liquid chromatography on a semipolar column. Fatty acids were readily separated quantitatively from fatty aldehydes by formation of dimethylhydrazones of the aldehydes followed by an alkaline extraction of the reaction mixture prior to gas chromatography. A method for analysis of fatty acids and aldehydes from plasmalogens is described.
