Abstract

Material erosion from the working surfaces of gas bearings can cause failure. A gas bearing gyroscope wheel, used in guidance instruments for space vehicles, experienced this type of failure. The problem was revealed by the use of optical and scanning electron microscopes. Elimination of the problem was completed via better preparation of the surfaces in contact with the gas film.
