Abstract

The influence of a series of process parameters on gas assisted pressing of rapeseeds is presented in this comprehensive study. These influences are questions of interest for modified cage screw presses in upcoming industrial scale applications. Within this study, pilot scale tests have been performed on a linear piston press including seed moisture content (2% < ϕ < 6.5%), CO2‐pressure (10 MPa < PCO2 < 18 MPa), and temperature (40°C < ϑ < 120°C) each with and without gas assistance. Multistage pressing operations have been performed to enhance comparability to industrial scale process conditions. An oil quality analysis is discussed considering influence of CO2‐assistance on two temperature levels applicable in industry. Within this paper, effects of CO2 gas assistance are clarified. Two main phenomena have to be considered, first is a so called liquid volume effect and second is oil viscosity reduction. A calculation model for oil yield increase by gas assistance is presented.
