Abstract

Measurements of gas amplification in a proportional counter with CO2 were taken, at CO2 pressures ranging from 0.75 to 2.00 atm. From these measurements a new formula was derived for gas amplification in a proportional counter. An attempt at a theoretical explanation of this formula is given. In contrast with other formulae for gas amplification, good agreement between the formula and experimental data was found in nearly the whole region of gas amplification in the counter. It is expected that the formula is valid for a variety of gases under pressures comparable to atmospheric pressure, and that it is particularly appropiate for polyatomic gases.
