Abstract

Gary Maartens graduated in medicine from the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 1980. He then spent a year as a pre-registration house officer at the Warneford Hospital, Leamington Spa, UK. He returned to the hospitals of Cape Town, and from 1982—1989 he held the positions of medical officer and registrar. In 1990 he completed an infectious disease fellowship at the Department of Infection and Tropical Medicine, East Birmingham Hospital, UK. From 1991–1997, he was a consultant physician and lecturer in the Department of Medicine at UCT and the Groote Schuur Hospital.
