Abstract

A unique garnet pyroxenite lens is described from within the layered garnet peridotite mass at Ugelvik on the Island of Otroy, west Norway. Textural evidence, whole rock and mineral analyses suggest the original crystallisation of a high temperature enstatite phase formed at roughly 1500–1600°C and 35–40 kb pressure. This primary enstatite subsequently exsolved chrome diopside and garnet still at upper mantle temperatures and pressures of the order of 950–975°C and 35–37 kb, before the tectonic emplacement of the peridotite mass into its present crustal environment.
