Abstract

A geometric analysis and reasoning engine (GARE) has been developed for geometric modeling and geometric problem solving for robot task planning application. Geometric modeling and geometric reasoning are crucial components of the design and operation phases of the modern automated systems. Intelligent Computer Aided Design (ICAD) systems should not only allow for geometric modeling but also provide capabilities for reasoning with the geometry. Many interesting physical analysis problems that arise in various applications such as manufacturing and robotics can be transformed into equivalent geometric problems. The basic concept underlying the design of GARE is that many complex geometric reasoning problems can be solved by combining simple geometric algorithms, GARE consists of a geometric modeling system, a geometric task description system, and a geometric reasoning system. This paper presents an overview of various components of GARE and their integration.
