Abstract

Classical Studies are most at home in the academy, the special collections of libraries, or in archeological digs across the ancient world. Gardzienice is initially a place. A typical rural village of some 600 inhabitants in southeastern Poland 26 kilometers from the regional capital Lublin that is closer to the borders of the Ukraine and Belarus than it is to the country’s largest university in Warsaw or Poland’s oldest and most famous institution of higher learning and research, the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. Since the late 1990s, Gardzienice, led by its founding and only director, Wlodzimierz Staniewski, has been researching ancient Greek performance. Gardzienice’s production was based on text fragments from the original Greek reconstructed from papyri remains and stone carvings from the 5th century BC to the 2nd century AD.
