Abstract

We study the nonlinear response near the lower and upper gaps of a simple finite system that is intercalated between two linear systems. In this system, the nonlinear substrate potential is naturally asymmetric or its symmetry is broken by an external force. A general approach is developed in the low-amplitude or nonlinear Schrodinger limit to calculate the gap soliton envelope and the transmissivity that presents bistability. We illustrate our approach by applications to familiar systems such as the perturbed discrete sine-Gordon and Φ 4 systems
