Abstract

Summary A case is reported of gangrene of the upper left extremity in a newborn infant, born 50 hours after rupture of the membranes and two hours after the onset of labor; at delivery the affected extremity was found prolapsed between the cranium and the bony pelvis. Conservative therapy was ineffective and amputation was necessary on the eleventh day of life. To date, 42 similar cases have been reported in the literature, of which 11 were instances of gangrene of the upper extremity. The etiology is briefly discussed, and trauma is shown to be the most reasonable and most generally applicable cause of the condition.
