Abstract

The gamma rays resulting from the ring scatterers of Mg, Al, Fe and Bi bombarded with 2.95 MeV neutrons have been investigated. The cross sections for the 0.845 MeV gamma ray from Fe 56 and for the 1.37 MeV gamma ray from Mg 24 were 1.10±0.13 and 0.66±0.10 in barns respectively. The angular distributions of the gamma rays relative to the direction of the incident neutrons were both symmetric around 90° . These cross sections and angular distributions were compared with the statistical theory by the optical model. Our results were fairly well interpreted by using a diffuse potential well.
