Abstract

The absolute γ-ray intensity distribution for E γ > 3.5 MeV has been measured for the 197Au(p, γ) 198Hg reaction at E p = 4.0 MeV. A γ-ray production cross section for E γ > 3.5 MeV of 150 ± 39 nb was obtained corresponding to a total primary (p, γ) cross section of 96 ± 25 nb. The γ-ray intensity distribution was used to deduce the El strength function for 198Hg which is compared with available strength function information in neighbouring nuclei and with theoretical calculations.
