Abstract

Studies were made on the effects of gamma radiation on the properties of rubies and sapphires. As single crystal ruby was irradiated, and the usual absorption bands that exist between 200 and 550 m mu changed from four distinct bands to one continuous band inclusive of all wavelengths between 200 and 550 m mu . A slight change was noted from 550 to 650 m mu and then no change for longer wavelengths. Gamma irradiation also showed a great effect on the thermoluminescence given off by ruby. Increased irradiation also caused corresponding increases in the threshold energy of ruby necessary for lasing. Gamma irradiation caused about 50% decrease in transmission in sapphire. (P.C.H.)
