Abstract

The effects of gamma radiation dose and dose rate on the light output of three polymer scintillators were investigated. Samples were gamm irradiated with 60Co to 2–10 Mrad at 1.5-0.014 Mrad/h. Light outputs were measured just after irradiation and regularly thereafter until stable (within 7 days). Losses in light output were dependent on both the irradiator dose and log (dose rate), with more losses occuring at high doses and low dose rates. No recovery in light output occurred below a certain dose role irrespective of the dose. Derived equations relating the post-recovery light output to the log (dose rate) can be used to estimate the light output after irradiation at much lower and more realistic dose rates.
