Abstract

Thepurpose of nuclear medicine is diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Radionuclides are used in a routine imaging procedures of nuclear medicine. Radionuclides are combined with a chemical compound specified to related organ to form a radiopharmaceutical. These radiopharmaceuticals are introduced into patient’s body by injection, swallowing or inhalation. The radioactive part of radiopharmaceutical emits gamma radiations and these gamma rays are detected by a gamma camera. Thus, the abnormal physiological and metabolic activities are detected in target organs. The gamma camera image quality is strictly dependent on regular quality control tests. There are a lot of numbers of factors that contribute to the image quality such as uniformity, resolution and collimation. For the performance checking of the gamma cameras, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) standards are applied. In this study, daily, weekly and monthly quality control tests of gamma camera installed in our department were performed. Performed quality control tests according to NEMA standards yielded acceptable results
