Abstract

The kinetics of electrode have been studied in melts with the galvanostatic double pulse method, with special attention to the measurements of exchange current, activation energy, and double layer capacitance. Nernstian plots of the oxygen electrode potential against the concentration of oxide ion and the partial pressure of oxygen exhibit a straight line, the slope of which is consistent with the theoretical value of the reversible oxygen electrode. The exchange current densities measured with galvanostatic double pulse method were of the order of 105 A · m−2 and the transfer coefficient was . The Arrhenius plot of the exchange current density exhibited a straight line, yielding the activation energy of . The double layer capacitance was of the order of 10 F · m−2 and increased in proportion to square root of either the concentration of oxide ion or the partial pressure of oxygen.
