Abstract

Following german notes of authorisation plastic dowels with appropriate steel screws are admitted to fix facings in aerated concrete walls. With regard to the corrosion protection of steel screws up to the end of 1994 either galvanized steel screws or stainless steel screws were admitted for various kinds of wall material and also for aerated concrete. Since November 1994 the German Institute for Building Technology (DlBt), Berlin, has admitted exclusively stainless steel screws for these plastic dowels. The examinations regarding corrosion of 52 dowel screws mounted at 1 buildings led to the result that on certain conditions galvanized steel screws with an additional yellow chromate treatment represent an effective corrosion protection for the dowel screws examined for the corrosion conditions of the investigated buildings. On the basis of these examinations this type of corrosion protection for steel screws in plastic dowels is now admitted again for the use mentioned above by notes of authorisation by DIBt, Berlin.
