Abstract

Summary Sixty-seven cases of chronic cholecystitis have been reviewed and a comparison made between variations in the gall bladder shadow after oral cholecystography and different histological parameters of disease. A strong correlation was found between the density of the cholecystogram and the normality of the epithelium, and inversely with the degree of thickness of the wall and fibrosis of the lamina propria. Oedema, inflammatory cellular infiltrate and the presence of Rokitansky-Aschoff sinuses were not obviously related to function. Provided that minor histological changes are disregarded both a normal cholecystogram and absence of a shadow are adequate reflections of the condition of the gall bladder wall in the respects stated. The subjective radiological estimation of a faint gall bladder shadow remains valid as an indication of disease, but fails to indicate its degree of severity.
