W. ; Innanen, K. A. ; House, F. C. Abstract The galactic orbits of the clusters Cen, M 67, and NGC 188 were calculated in the mass models of Schmidt (1956, 1965) and Innanen (1966) using an advanced numerical method. Tidal radii of the clusters were calculated using the parameters of the orbits and a formula of King (1962). Comparisons were made with the observed limiting radii of the clusters. The discrepancy between the observed and calculated tidal radius of w Cen is tentatively explained as being the result of a selective pruning out of stars which have an angular momentum vector about the cluster in the same direction as the angular momentum vector of the cluster around the galactic centre. Stars with opposite angular momentum are unaffected by the galactic perturbing field out to much greater distances from the cluster. Simple numerical experiments and the recent results of Toomre and Toomre (1972) and Wright (1972) confirm this effect.
