Abstract

The existence of a correlation between power gain and phase noise performance of a microwave FET amplifier is demonstrated, both theoretically through non-linear simulation and experimentally. This behavior has important consequences on low phase noise oscillator design. As an example, the classical design approach based on maximising the resonator loaded Q factor needs to be re-examined.
