Abstract

The measured gain, pattern and bandwidth characteristics of a uniformly wound helical antenna are presented. Experimental parametric studies were made of 1) variable length helices (5 to 35 turns) with constant diameter and pitch angle, and 2) fixed length helices with variable diameter and pitch angle. An empirical expression is derived for the antenna peak gain as a function of the helix design parameters. In addition, the antenna bandwidth characteristics are analyzed.
