Abstract
An experimental study was undertaken to investigate the characteristics of XeCl discharge lasers at high gas pressures (∼ 15 atm). From a comparison of the fluorescence measurements with the net small signal gain coefficients, it was concluded that absorption is the main cause of the catastrophic drop in laser output power in higher pressures. Accounting for such molecular absorbers as Xe+2, Xe*2, and Xe2Cl*, the absorption coefficient,K, was calculated using a simple steady-state analysis and the net gain coefficients deduced from the calculated absorptions came to within an order of magnitude of the measured values.
