Abstract

The circumscription of Gaillonia is extended to include Crocyllis as a new generic synonym. Gaillonia then becomes a genus with a marked disjunction between NE Africa and Arabia, and SW Africa. Nine species of Gaillonia are recognized in Africa and Arabia: G. yemenensis sp. nov. and G. jolana sp. nov. in Yemen, G. crocyllis comb. nov. in Namibia and South Africa, G. calcicola comb. nov. and G. somaliensis comb. nov. in Somalia, and G. puberula, G. putorioides comb, nov., G thymoides and G. tinctoria on Socotra (Yemen). Several names are lectotypified. A previous record of Jaubertia aucheri from Yemen is based on a misidentified specimen of G. jolana. The close relationship between Gaillonia and the small Mediterranean genus Putoria is pointed out.
