Abstract

Earn little, live well. The family life and professional career of a hosiery worker during the second half of the 20th century. Using a survey conducted with a former worker in a textile company based in a rural area, this article discusses the combination of a professional and wage-based story characterized by holding a poorly-paid position with few qualifications, and the impression of a successful and accomplished life. This combination of ethnography and history reveals how life choices become intelligible once the overview of possibilities has been highlighted and provides an account of the life of a worker, a woman and a parishioner.
