Abstract
Abstract Analysis of the geographical extent of the Gaelic language in Scotland has received comparatively little attention despite much interest in Scotland's Gaelic heritage. The paper examines the geographical extent and patterns of usage of Gaelic for one particular parish — Port of Menteith in Perthshire — at a specific period. The examination of a number of lists of Gaelic‐speakers in Port of Menteith for 1724–1725 casts light upon the patterns and processes of Gaelic language usage within the eighteenth‐century Scottish Highlands.
