Abstract
Philodemus was a native of Gadara, a famous Hellenistic city in southern Syria. This essay, which draws heavily on the results of recent excavations of the city, traces the history of Gadara from the Ptolemaic period until the Roman period, when it reached its apex as as a cultural center.
