Abstract

The removal of neurotransmitters by their transporters — located in the plasma membranes of nerve terminals and glial cells — plays an important role in the termination of synaptic transmission. The GABA transporter GAT-1 is the first neurotransmitter transporter to be purified, reconstituted and cloned. It belongs to a large superfamily of neurotransmitter transporters. Its properties and its relation to the other family members will be discussed.
