Abstract
Journal bearings are widely used for supporting high-speed rotational machinery, such as turbine and compressor because of their high load carrying capacity, stability, and durability. Recently, the engineering trend is oriented to higher rotational speed and miniaturizing rotational machinery. Hence, it is important to enhance the stabilities of the journal bearing rotation. In order to improve the stability of journal bearing, one of the effective ways is to use starved lubrications. However, under starved lubrication, risk of contact between the bearing surface and shaft because of the thin oil film condition will lead to seizures. Therefore, it is necessary to improve stability of journal bearing without contact. This paper describes the knowhow of stabilizing journal bearings by controlling the oil supply quantity to maintain oil film thickness adequacy. Results showed that by using the method proposed, journal bearing with a high stability and operational-safe rotations was successfully obtained.
