Abstract

PEARL is a user-oriented high level programming language designed for a wide spectrum of process control applications. A short anwser is tried to the question of how PEARL relates to the various other types of programming languages available on process computers. PEARL still seems to be the only one with true embedded realtime features high enough in level to grant economical process control for industrial applicationsApplication experience is then described by reporting about four different control systems programmed with PEARL which control four different types of technical processes: continuous, batch, discrete particle, and sequential processes. All projects were successful. This suggests that PEARL truly can be called an application independent realtime programming languageFinally, some facts about the availability of PEARL are given. PEARL is standardized and available from manufacturers on an international basis. Recently a user organization - the PEARL Association (or PEARL Verein in German) - was founded which will be providing interested parties with services like information on experiences with PEARL, newsletter, and exchange of programs
