Abstract

Abstract The USMP-3 MEPHISTO experiments yielded the first quantitative correlation between well-characterized g-jitter recorded by spacecraft accelerometers and the response of a directionally solidifying alloy. Preliminary results indicate that a “cause-and-effect” relationship between g-jitter and disturbances in the transport conditions can be clearly identified, and that theoretical modeling can be used to give reliable predictions of experiment sensitivity to g-jitter.
