Abstract

This study investigated the difference of life satisfaction according to the general characteristics and child friendliness of a city, and this study also examined the effect of the general characteristics and child friendliness of a city on the life satisfaction of children and adolescents. The subjects of this study were 275 elementary school students, 153 middle school students and 185 high school students. The data was analyzed using PASW ver. 21.0 to conduct descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, correlation analysis and the hierarchial regression analysis. The main results of the analysis can be summarized as follows. First, there was a significant difference in life satisfaction of the children and adolescents according to the general characteristics and child friendliness of a city. Second, the general characteristics among children’s’ school level and their academic achievement had an influence upon the life satisfaction of children and adolescents. The child friendliness of a city, a city’s safety and protection, health and social services and housing had an influence upon the life satisfaction of children and adolescents. These results show that a local community approach is needed for the life satisfaction of children and adolescents. This study is meaningful to provide basic data for the creation of child friendly cities and the policies that affect the life satisfaction of children.
