Abstract Deep CCD images, spectrophotometry, and astronomy are presented for the variable star FY Aql, which is located within the error box of the March 31, 1979 gamma-ray burst event. Deep red CCD images reveal that FY Aql is surrounded by a faint, extended nebulosity centered on the variable star. Spectrophotometry of FY Aql and its nebulosity suggests that it is an M4e III Mira variable star embedded in an extended reflection nebula. It is argued that there is at present no compelling observational evidence to suggest that this system is the optical counterpart of the March 31, 1979 gamma-ray burst.
