Abstract

In this paper, based on the theory of sliding mode control (SMC) and fuzzy logic control (FLC), a new fuzzy sliding mode control (FSMC) method is presented for controlling the vibration of building structures with an active tuned mass damper (ATMD) installed at the top floor. The undue chattering effect, the major disadvantage of conventional sliding mode controllers, has been avoided by introducing this new method without losing the robustness against parametric uncertainties and modeling inaccuracies. The building is modeled as a shear frame and the problem is solved in state space. The simulation results obtained from the proposed control scheme (FSMC) are compared with those obtained from the tuned mass damper (TMD), and active mass damper (AMD) control methods. It shows preliminarily that the new control method is quite effective: not only can it reduce the peak-response of the ground motion, but also it can keep the chattering effect sufficiently low so as to ensure the system stable.
