Abstract
The necessity to maintain frequency stabilization in low-inertia microgrids (MG) while incorporating renewable energy sources (RES) significantly hinders system inertia restoration. To solve this issue, virtual inertia control (VIC)-based energy storage would boost the inertia of MGs. However, the fixed virtual inertia factor used in this methodology highlights challenges with frequency regulation (FR) of MGs with varying RES intermittency. The fixed virtual inertia factor or suboptimal value selection could lead to severe frequency fluctuations in the grid. Therefore, to overcome the issue mentioned above and provide adaptive inertia management, which is essential for functional MG operation with RES penetration, this work suggests a rule-based self-adaptive VIC technique that makes use of the fuzzy logic control principle.
