Abstract

A new form of analysis (flowsheeting) of complex chemical engineering systems using fuzzy mathematics has been developed. Fuzzy-numerical and numerical-fuzzy interfaces are presented in the form of three algorithms. A simple modification of the generally known sequential simulation algorithm together with an algorithm of a fuzzy discrete simulation enables the development of an efficient program for the simulation of non-uniform (conventional, fuzzy or mixed) mathematical models of chemical processes, without the need to redesign the executive algorithm. The theory of fuzzy sets helps to put semiquantitative information into a form which is acceptable to a computer. This is the most important reason why fuzzy descriptions should be taken seriously in chemical engineering.
