Abstract
Wear is a little known and very complex problem. To deal with such tasks realistically an approach is needed which does not overestimate mathematical formalism. An alternative approach is based on the premise that key elements in human thinking are not numbers but words. Linguistic quantification is used to specify engineering experience. Linguistic value is transformed into a fuzzy set by a grade of membership. A fuzzy set is a class with the continuum grade of membership. In this way the linguistic description is transformed into a fuzzy set of a rather complicated structure. An example of ball-bearing wear is given.
