Abstract

In hyperthermia the constancy of the target temperature must be observed. However, there is a non-linearity between power output and the tissue temperature. Using fuzzy logic, it is not necessary to know the power transfer characteristics in tissue. The power-output factors as a function of the input factors of the process are described by linguistic rules. According to the experience of a user of hyperthermia, defined in- and output values are assigned to „fuzzy” corresponding functions with several labels. Using the input parameters (AND-OR combination), the fuzzy rules (IF-THEN structure) must be applied; finally a defined output value is evaluated. We could demonstrate differences of the temperature constancy in a phantom controlled by a PID and a fuzzy controller. With fuzzy control the position of the sensor and the non-linearity of the transfer of the electromagnetic energy does not influence the behaviour of the control process.
