Abstract

Mobile communications is one of the fastest growing market segments in telecommunications. The current mobile systems are expected to saturate around the turn of the century, which has fuelled an intense research and development effort towards a new generation mobile system, universal mobile telecommunication system (UMTS). This paper first outlines the salient features of existing European mobile systems. It then details the requirements and services behind the development of third generation systems. It then explains the evolutionary path for UMTS, and finally reviews the major technical advances for UMTS to be a reality. >
