Abstract
QCD, accepted as the fundamental theory of the strong interactions, must underline nuclear structure and the shell model in particular. But that does not mean that we should describe the nucleus directly in QCD terms. It seems likely that the effective constituent picture of nuclear structure in which a nucleonic shell model skeleton is fleshed out with mesonic exchanges and isobaric excitations will remain permanently valid.
