Abstract
The Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan recognizes the crucial role of horticulture, increasing agricultural productivity and contributing to food security at the household, community and national levels. In parallel with food security, the development of commercial markets and the improvement of crop quality will be a priority for strengthening the rural economy. Peaches are the leading deciduous fruit crop grown in Afghanistan and it is surveyed during 2006 and 2007 that 1,546 nursery of stone and pome fruits are registered which produce 12,924,928 saplings per year. The Government initiated the formation of a policy and legal framework agreed by all stakeholders within the horticultural industry. This paper provide a view of the peach industry focusing the main weak points to be addressed at production, technical and commercial level. In addition, this paper summarises the main policy and strategic documents such as the Afghanistan National Development Strategy (ANDS), the National Agricultural Development Framework (NADF) and the National Priority Programs (NPP) which are creating the basis for future horticultural production in Afghanistan.
