Abstract

Abstract In this article, the author develops scenarios for the future and schooling in American society, focusing on two mythical secondary school settings. He then considers the needs and concerns of schools in the coming decades, dividing his comments into the following categories or headings: The Ethos of Schooling and Teaching and Good Schools, the Quality of People in the Schools, Technology and Other Distractions, Social and Learner Characteristics, Civic Conscience, Interrelatedness of Schooling and Other Social Institutions, and Aesthetics. The over-arching themes of the piece are: the enormous needs of the society; the place of schooling in meeting these needs; the emergence of the school as the place where needs and help may converge; the requirement for people of dedication and ability and for places of development, caring, and learning. The author concludes with several recommendations for teacher educators.
