Abstract
Fusion welding of stainless steels is reviewed in terms of recent developments in welding processes, and in understanding of weld zone metallurgy. Key areas for further research comprise:<list list-type="simple"><list-item>(a) Extension of the capabilities of the double-flux gas-tungsten-arc process,</list-item><list-item>(b) Evaluation of the factors controlling the upper limit of travel speed attainable during welding,</list-item><list-item>(c) Evaluation of microstructure/toughness relations in duplex stainless steel weld metal and HAZ regions.</list-item></list>
