Abstract

AbstractThe title compound was synthesized from La, LaBr3 and Sb under Ar atmosphere at 950 °C. It crystallizes in the space group Pnma (No. 62) with lattice parameters a = 30.949(6), b = 4.3042(9), c = 19.675(4) Å and Z = 4. Its structure consists of reduced rare earth halide and intermetallic components. These partial structures are the [La8Br8]∞ elongated octagon stars, Sb‐centered [La3Sb]∞ trigonal prismatic columns and stripes of Sb square meshes up to 2.9 nm wide. Computational analysis shows that title compound has one framework electron per formula in the La metal trigonal prisms but otherwise is electron‐deficient in the intermetallic part. Susceptibility measurement revealed temperature‐independent Pauli paramagnetism.
