Abstract

AbstractWe present preliminary results of a study of intergalactic absorption in the far-ultraviolet (FUV; 915-1730 Å) along the line of sight to the quasar PG 1259+593, using high signal-to-noise data from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) and the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS). We have analyzed 135 intergalactic absorption features, including Lyman HI absorption and various metal lines. The combined FUV spectrum of PG 1259+593 exhibits several intervening O VI absorbers, which represent a significant baryon reservoir in the low-redshift Universe.
