Abstract

ABSTRACT Three experiments were performed to investigate the relationship between growth hormone (GH) and corticotrophin (ACTH) secretion in insulin-induced hypoglycemia: 1) Hypoglycemia was terminated 30 min after the insulin injection by acute iv administration of glucose. Four of 6 subjects showed partial suppression of plasma GH and corticosteroids (CS) responses. In no case were the rises in plasma GH and CS dissociated. 2) Dexamethasone pretreatment also suppressed plasma GH and CS responses concomitantly in 5 subjects studied. 3) Phentolamine, on the other hand, inhibited only GH response but not CS increase. Although these results were not conclusive, they favor the possibility that GH and ACTH release in insulin-induced hypoglycemia occurs by stimulation of a common center and phentolamine affects the GH secretory pathway only.
