Abstract

The effect of cyanide, thiocyanate, ferricyanide, and nitrite in equimolar amounts to nitroprusside (5 mg/kg) was noted. Cyanide alone produced hypothermia comparable in magnitude to that produced by nitroprusside at the 30-min interval following injection by the ip route. The time course of the effect of cyanide (1.03, 2.05, and 4.1 mg/kg ip) upon rectal temperature was found to be dose dependent. Sodium nitrite pretreatment (25 and 50 mg/kg) prevented the hypothermia caused by cyanide and nitroprusside. Nitroprusside-induced hypothermia appears to be mediated indirectly through the in vivo release of cyanide.
