Abstract

One-day-old turkey poults were infected by various routes to elucidate the pathogenesis of Mycoplasma meleagridis in the target organs considered to be important for congenital transmission. The results indicated that (1) infection of the oviduct may occur early in the life of the turkey by an endogenous route, (2) infection of the intestinal tract does not occur by passage of the organism from the yolk sac through the yolk stalk, and (3) bursal lymphocytes do not play a role in transporting the organism to bursal dependent organs.
