Abstract

Abstract Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) from 12 Chinese subjects and one Thai man was partially purified and characterized by starch gel electrophoresis, Michaelis constant for G-6-P, substrate specificity (utilization of 2-deoxy G-6-P), relative thermostability, and pH optimum. Six subjects including the Thai man probably had G-6-PD Canton. Comparison with data obtained from a previous report suggest the range of abnormalities to be expected in this enzyme. Six Hakka Chinese subjects from Taiwan had 2 other variants which differed electrophoretically from G-6-PD Canton and kinetically from each other. One Chinese man had a variant resembling G-6-PD Panay, originally reported in Filipino subjects. G-6-PD deficiency among Chinese is heterogeneous.
