Abstract

Hyperiid amphipods (64 species) taken in 215 samples along a north-south section (9-32� S., 110�E.) over a period of 1 year were identified, counted and the distribution studied. This study extends the range of several species. Numerical analyses (divisive and agglomerative) were carried out on the data to determine sampling site groups, species groups and their relationship to each other. A relationship was found between one species group (Phronimella elongata, Anchylomera blossevillei and Hyperietta stephenseni) and low-temperature, high-salinity subtropical waters, and between three other groups (Vibilia armata, Eupronoe armata, E. minula; Platyscelus serratulus, Paratyphis maculatus; and Paraphronima gracilis, Eupronoe laticarpa, Amphithyrus bispinosus) and the higher-temperature, low-salinity tropical waters.
